Since our last post on the topic, most of the bills have been introduced and referred to standing committees. For a brief description of each bill see that previous post or click on the bill links below to see the actual bill language. Each proposal but one has a Senate and Assembly bill listed. These are identical companion bills, a common tactic to allow for proposals to begin the legislative process in each house simultaneously.

A bill to repeal the existing state statute that prohibits Wisconsin public school districts from beginning the school term prior to Sept. 1 has been introduced as Assembly Bill 103.
The bill has been referred to the Assembly Education Committee chaired by state Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac).

The WASB-initiated bill to modernize the publication of school board meeting minutes (proceedings) authored by state Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac) and Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) has been introduced as Assembly Bill 70. The bill has been referred to the Assembly Committee on Local Government chaired by Rep. Ed Brooks (R-Reedsburg) who is also a co-author of the bill.
This bill authorizes school boards (and other local government entities) to satisfy their legal obligation to publish the proceedings of regular and special meetings by posting a copy of the proceedings in a public place and electronically placing a copy on the school district website.

Assembly Education Committee chairman, state Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac, pictured), Rep. Jason Fields (D-Milwaukee), Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-Saukville) and Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) are asking fellow lawmakers to sign on to a proposal to update and modernize the requirement for government entities to publish meeting proceedings (minutes) in local newspapers. This proposal could save many school districts thousands of dollars a year in publishing costs. We encourage you to contact your legislator and ask them to sign on as a co-author of LRB 0506 – publication of minutes. The deadline is February 7.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has announced state Assembly committee membership for the 2017-18 legislative session. As we previously shared here, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (pictured) is returning as chairman of the Assembly Education Committee. This is his second session as chair of the committee. Below are the other GOP Representatives (minority/Democrat committee membership has not yet been announced) on the committee including the school districts represented by each. If you are a board member or administrator in one of these districts you are in a prime position to influence committee action on K-12 legislation this session. State Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac) returns as chair of the Assembly Committee on Education. Rep. Thiesfeldt is a former teacher and administrator in two Lutheran elementary schools and a Lutheran high school. Vice chair of the committee is Rep. Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay), a veterinarian and former school board member. Rep. Kitchens was president of the Sturgeon Bay School Board for 12 years. Continue reading Rep.
