Bill Seeks Transparency on Property Tax Impact of Voucher Funding

Rep. Dana WachsA recently introduced Assembly Bill—Assembly Bill 267—aims to call attention to the growing impact of Wisconsin voucher programs on school property taxes.

The “Wisconsin Voucher Taxpayer Transparency Bill,” authored by state Rep. Dana Wachs (D-Eau Claire) would require property tax bills to include information from the school district where the property is located regarding the amount of any net reduction in state aid, if any, to the district as a result of pupils enrolled in the statewide voucher program, the Racine voucher program, or the Milwaukee voucher program. (See news release.)

Fab Lab Grants Awarded to 21 WI School Districts

FabLabDay2017Governor Scott Walker and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) today announced 21 school districts throughout the state have been awarded a total of nearly $500,000 in grants to establish or expand local fabrication laboratory (fab lab) facilities.

JFC Hearings Wrap Up, Votes to Begin in Early May

JFC Hearing in Spooner 2017_04_18_102402At the close of today’s (April 20) hearing in Marinette, the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee (JFC) will have concluded its schedule of six public hearings on the 2017-19 state budget.

Capitol sources indicate the committee is likely to begin taking votes to approve, modify or delete specific budget items during the first week in May.  (Watch the WASB Legislative Update Blog for information about the JFC’s schedule and actions.)

Public education was well-represented at the six JFC hearings, with many school district administrators, school board members, teachers, parents, retired teachers, and public school advocates among those addressing the committee.

Several Significant K-12 Policy Items Remain in Budget Bill

Governor’s Budget Eliminates Farm to School Position/Council

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Annysa Johnson:

farm“Gov. Scott Walker has proposed cutting the office’s now-vacant coordinator position and 15-member advisory council as part of his 2017-’19 budget, a move that would save $132,800 over the biennium.

“Walker’s spokesman, Tom Evenson, said the agency would continue to seek and disburse federal grants targeting farm-to-school efforts, and that another program manager will help out in the office.
